Are swelled gums generally a side effect of canker sores?

I get canker sores pretty often, like once a month or so... they are pretty painful... and last forever! It sucks, and I know its hereditary b/c everyone on my mom's side of the family gets them alot. Well my most recent one, on the inside of my left cheek, was caused because I bit my cheeck really bad, and my gums on the left side of my mouth began to swell pretty badly.... is this a common side effect?
